Nothing ever really lasts. Eventually your computer will get old and give in, and there’s nothing you can do about it. But what you CAN do is to make the most of your computer by making it last longer. Here are some habits that you should develop in order to keep your computer in good shape, inside and out.

Defragment regularly. The recommended frequency is monthly. With all the files that you add, delete and move, your drive gets fragmented, affecting performance. Regular defragmentation will help make your computer run faster.

Disk Cleanup. Do this every week. There are just some files that need to go because they only clutter up your memory, making it difficult for your more important tasks to run smoothly.

Clean your hardware. This is important too. Try to keep some cleaning stuff (like a brush and some rags) beside your computer so that you can just brush off dirt or clean up a mess immediately. But it is also recommended that you do general cleanups with the use of commercial cleaning kits on your hardware.

Keep you antivirus active. Don’t rely on automatic alerts to protect your computer. Do on command scans if you have the time – you’ll be surprised at some of the potential viruses that were overlooked by your software. Also have separate virus removers to supplement your antivirus, most of which are downloadable for free online.

These aren’t really tough to do. So keep it up and you and your computer will be fine for a long while.

FileZilla is a good and easy to use FTP Client, which will allow you to transfer files between local computers and remote servers much better. Here’s a rundown on using the application for the first time:

1.Open FileZilla and a window will open with several smaller windows inside. The one on top will show commands and the one on the left is your computer’s (local computer) window. The right window is for the remote computer. The left and right windows have their own directory windows for you to work with.

2.Go to your webhost for your FTP hostname, username and password. Click on File>Site Manager. A new window will open. Click New Site and an icon will appear in the Select Entry Pane.

3.Enter your site’s name.

4.To the right of that pane, click the General Tab, where you can type in your host name and choose your logon type.

5.Enter your username and password and click connect. The top window will show the command to logon.

6.From here the main window will show some directories. Then you can start transferring between your directory in the local computer window and the new one.

The key to being able to make use of your Performance Monitor (perfmon.exe) is to know how interpret logs. Knowing what they mean will help you point out the bottlenecks that exist in your system.

First you have to stop your running perfmon.exe. Right click on the green button and have it stop.

Click on the Log Icon on the upper left area of the screen and then find your log file in the place where you set the directory and open it.

Click on the “+” button (in the same row as the Log Icon) to select the objects and counters you want to look at. You can start with the % Processor. Click on Add and a static line will appear on your graph.

Add more objects and counters as you wish, but keep in mind that you can only pick the ones you selected when you created the log.

Once you’re done, all the objects and counters you’ve added will show a static line on the graph. The entire information will look like a still shot of the actual performance monitoring process.

You can also adjust the time frame by right clicking anywhere on the graph and click the Source Tab where the Time Range slide bar can be adjusted. This will help you interpret the data you have on your log.

Learning how to create logs through perfmon.exe will help you to better identify network bottlenecks in your system. And in running performance monitor tasks, your goal is to create a log which you can interpret later on. Here’s how:

Make your way through System Monitor> Performance Logs> Alerts> Counter Logs so you can create your first log.

A dialogue box will appear. Make a name for your log and place it in your desired directory (or the default perflog directory).

Next you have to add Objects or Counters. Objects are simpler so you might want to start there. Once you are more familiar with objects and counters based on what you want data on as well as how much your disk space can accommodate, you can be pickier about your settings.

Then you need to set your time-interval. Make sure you set this in relation to your available disk space. For first timers you can choose the 15 seconds default.

Click Add and your selections will be all set for your performance monitoring.

Right click on the green button to make the performance monitoring begin or end.

Once you are more familiar with the nitty-gritty of logging you will be able to manipulate how perfmon works for you.
