What is the most popular version of Linux and the most popular Linux Distribution?

Linux has come out with many versions over the years. These versions vary from easy user interfaces to complicated versions where a lot of learning is required to use. Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS and MEPIS are the easiest user friendly versions that can be mastered in little time by novice users. ON the other hand, Slackware Linux, Gentoo Linux, and FreeBSD are very complicated and can take a lot of time to master. Doing a Google search for most popular Linux distribution reveals that by far Ubuntu is voted the by most users as the most popular version out to date.

Ubuntu was first released in 2004 and it quickly became the most popular version. Ubuntu is famed for having a very easy to use interface while still competing with many of the commercial systems available today. It has a web based infrastructure with Wiki-style documentation, innovative bug-reporting, and still maintains a very professional approach. Ubuntu has an every six month release schedule making its updates very timely and predictable. A downside of the program however, is that it is not compatible with Debian. Ubuntu is shipped free on CD to all interested users.

Overview of commercial grade linux network monitoring systems

Linux has been a long time producer of open source, free or low cost, programs, servers, monitoring applications, and operating systems. Linux has come out with a number of commercial grade applications that either meet or exceed the capabilities of applications released by major companies such as Cisco and Microsoft. One of the network monitoring systems Linux has released is Nagios. Nagios is feature rich with many feature needed of a network monitoring service. It can monitor network services in many platforms, (SMTP, POP3, HTTP, NNTP, PING), monitor host resources such as processors and log files, as well as define network host hierarchy. Nagios is free to download from http://www.nagios.org.

Another network monitoring program Linux released is Zabbix. Zabbix also claims to be feature rich and is also open source and available for free download from http://www.zabbix.com. Zabbix offers distributed monitoring; centralized access to all information and support for up to 1000 nodes. Web monitoring is another feature in which Zabbix offers flexible scenarios as well as support for POST and GET methods. Zabbix has the high performance and ease of use that can be expected from Linux products.

Crontab in essence is the Linux version of task scheduler for windows. It is a program that will allow users to create jobs that will run as the user at any given time. Each user has their own crontab that will run as the user even if the user is not logged into the system (the system will run the cron at the scheduled times).

Basic Crontab commands:
crontab [File]
# above command lets you to install crontab from a file
crontab -e [-u username]
# allows you to edit a crontab, you can specify a username as well
crontab -r [-u username]
# allows you to remove a crontab
crontab -l [-u username]
# allows you to list the jobs in a crontab

Crontab Format:
There are six fields to a crontab, each separated by a space. The first five fields specify when the command is to be run; the sixth field is the command itself. minute hour day month day command

Example:
Minute Minutes after the hour (0-59)
Hour 24-hour format (0-23)
Day Day of the month (1-31)
Month Month of the year (1-12)
Weekday Day of the week (0-6; 0 refers to Sunday)

* * * * * <command> #Runs every minute
*/5 * * * * <command> #Runs every 5 minuites
30 * * * * <command> #Runs at 30 minutes past the hour
45 6 * * * <command> #Runs at 6:45 am every day
45 18 * * * <command> #Runs at 6:45 pm every day
00 1 * * 0 <command> #Runs at 1:00 am every Sunday
00 1 * * 7 <command> #Runs at 1:00 am every Sunday
00 1 * * Sun <command> #Runs at 1:00 am every Sunday
30 8 1 * * <command> #Runs at 8:30 am on the first day of every month
00 0-23/2 02 07 * <command> #Runs every other hour on the 2nd of July

By default a cron job will send an email to the user account executing the cronjob. If this is not needed put the following command at the end of the cron job line:

> /dev/null 2>&1

Example:

*/5 * * * * /bin/command > /dev/null 2>&1
Refer to the man page for further information about crontab by typing.

man crontab

This is a quick and simple linux FTP backup script we use to run on clients servers that have small backups that need to be shipped off to a remote FTP server somewhere. You can basically backup anything from here, Mysql, Apache config files, webserver files etc…

Requirments:
Shell access
ncftp
Vi or Pico/Nano editor
Cron

Step 1:
Log into your server as the user you want to run this script as (usually root). You can then create a file somewhere on your server (I usually put the file in /etc/backup)

# cd /etc
# mkdir backup
# cd backup
# nano backup.sh

Step 2:
Cut and paste the script I have written into the file and then edit the parts required (it is spretty streight forward to understand but I will put comments on each line — the comments will start with a * so do not add these comments into your script). After you have edited and save the file you must chmod the file 755 to make it executable

#!/bin/sh
HOST=’192.168.1.3′
* this can be an ip address or a hostname of the destination FTP server
USER=’ftpbackup’
* the username of the ftp server
PASSWD=’backup0012′
* the password on the ftp server
DATE=`/bin/date +%Y%m%d`
* no edits for DATE
TIME=`/bin/date +%H`
* No Edits for TIME
HOSTNAME=`/bin/hostname`
* No edits for HOSTNAME

mysqldump -c -B -uroot -pfoobar DB1 DB2 mysql > data.sql &&
* This is if you want to backup your mysql database, DB1 and DB2 represent databases within mysql you want yo backup -uroot -pfoobar (change this to your mysql username and password). if you are not backing up mysql then remove the above line.

tar zcvf $DATE.$TIME.$HOSTNAME.tar.gz ./data.sql /etc/ /var/www > /dev/null &&
* you can edit this line as you wish if you are not backing up mysql you can remove ./data.sql, you can add directories such as /etc and /var/www

ncftpput -u $USER -p $PASSWD $HOST /tobebackedup $DATE.$TIME.$HOSTNAME.tar.gz ;:
* nothing to edit here

The finished script:

#!/bin/sh
HOST=’192.168.1.3′
USER=’ftpbackup’
PASSWD=’backup0012′
DATE=`/bin/date +%Y%m%d`
TIME=`/bin/date +%H`
HOSTNAME=`/bin/hostname`

mysqldump -c -B -uroot -pfoobar DB1 DB2 mysql > data.sql &&
tar zcvf $DATE.$TIME.$HOSTNAME.tar.gz ./data.sql > /dev/null &&

ncftpput -u ftpbackup -p backup0012 $HOST /tobebackedup $DATE.$TIME.$HOSTNAME.tar.gz ;:

Running the script on a schedule (Crontab howto):
as the user that you want to run the backup script as type the following commands:

crontab -e
To run weekly on Sunday enter the line:
* * * * 6 /etc/backup/backup.sh
