Recovering product keys for windows 98

If you have to find the product key in Windows 98, there are a few choices for the process to take. The first two can be accomplished without third party software, and the last is by simply downloading the program from the site listed, and following the instructions included. Since the security for Windows 98 doesn’t extend to the console user, the first two options should work for most cases. Keyfinder programs are geared towards newer Windows versions, such as XP and Vista, but they will work for the older versions as well.

1. Click START >> RUN.
2. Type regedit.
3. Click OK.
4. Browse through to the key labeled:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionProductID
Write this key down, and keep it safe.

Another option:
1. Open a DOS box.
2. Type C:>find /i “ProductKey” C:windowssystem.dat

Alternatively, you can use a third party keyfinder. Two excellent choices are:
Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder – http://www.magicaljellybean.com/

This is a useful program for system administrators, regardless of the version of Windows being used. It contains a full set of documentation to find various product keys for many different versions of Windows, as well as many other product keys, such as Office.

Win98: Enable Direct Memory Access

Direct Memory Access, or DMA, is a method which allows your computer to read or write on a drive without passing the information through the CPU first. Sometimes called bus mastering, this reduces CPU usge and can greatly speed up performance on a slower machine. DMA must sometimes be enabled for CD-ROM or DVD drives, and occasionally with other types of removable drives.

1. Click START >> Settings >> Control Panel.
2. Double-click “System”.
3. Click the “Device Manager” tab.
4. Double-click the CDROM branch.
5. Double-click the CD-ROM to set DMA for.
6. Click the “Settings” tab.
7. Check the DMA box.
8. Click OK.
9. Restart the computer.

Test the drive that you set up DMA for, to be sure it is functioning. If, for some reason, it is not, then it may not be compatible with DMA access. If that happens, repeat the steps above, except UNCHECK the DMA box.

Windows 98 can be made to run much faster and crash less by makeing a few adjustments here and there. One of the adjustments that can be made is setting windows 98 to use “Network Server Mode” to do this your windows 98 must have more then 24MB of physical memory. This setting will aggressively buffer data in memory, which then reduces time-consuming disk operations and will optimize the File System. The name Network Server Mode is misleading and your desktop functions will remain unaffected.

1) Select Start > Settings > Control Panel

2) Open System, select the Performance tab, click on File System under the Advanced Settings heading

3) On the Hard Disk tab, select Network Server as the typical role of this computer
