The Fix

If the blackberry controller service doesnt start or stops getting mail to the blackberry do the following: 1) stop the dns server 2) restart/start all the blackberry services 3) start the dns server 4) open blackberry manager 5) resend it policy 6) resend service books

Blackberry controller wont start

When composing and sending a message in Outlook Web Access it has become a common problem to find that Internet Explorer 7 crashes. It is a known issue and a fix has been posted by Microsoft which needs to be downloaded and installed.

Update for Exchange Server 2003 SP2 (KB 924334)

This installation does mean that the Exchange services will be down for the duration of the installation process.

For those people operating Front End and Back End servers the fix does need to be installed on the Front End Servers first. If this is not done issues may occur in the running of Outlook Web Access.

Once the fix has been installed then the S/MIME control must be uninstalled on all machines using Internet Explorer 7, and reinstalled from the server. This can be done by making use of the Add/Remove Programs facility within the Control Panel. OWA’s Options screen should be used to reinstall the new version.

The fix linked to is a new fix and replaces previous fixes which need to be reinstalled.

Reporting Junk Email Spam reporting

Microsoft has recently released a new tool that allows for junk email to be reported as such, especially for those mails that have eluded the built in spam defences.

The tool allows for spam email to be forwarded to Microsoft through the use of the junk email button. You will need to confirm that you want to send the mail to FrontBridge, part of the Microsoft group, and once confirmed the message will be removed from your inbox. Once sent you will receive back a confirmation email.

By sending the junk mail to Microsoft you will be helping the company to discover just how spammers are operating, what tricks they are employing and also what tools they are using to bypass spam filters. There is nothing confidential that is being sent on and so will help in the long run to reduce the number of junk emails that everyone receives

Reporting Junk Email Spam reporting

The top most Public Folder is known as the Top-Level Public Folder, and be default is a folder that anyone can create. The default though can be changed through the use of the Directory Service Interfaces editing tool as found in the Support Tools of Windows.

Opening the Editing tool through Start/Programs/Windows 2000 Support Tools, Tools, ADSI Edit, double click on the Configuration Container.

Once opened expand the CN=Configuration, CN=Services, CN=Microsoft Exchange, and then click on the container for your business before selecting Properties. Then choose the Security tab and then click on Advanced. Permissions will need to be changed, so locate the Everyone entry that relates to “Create Top Level Public Folder”, then select the Deny checkbox. Exit through all of the dialog boxes and then close the editing tool.

This process will though also include you in the denial process, to make sure that you can create top level folders you will need to use specific groups of people rather than Everyone.

Limiting the Creation of Public Folders in Exchange 2000/2003

When logging into Microsoft Outlook Web Access for the first time the Calendar, Journal, Tasks, Notes and Contact folders are always created in English. The MAPI, Messaging Application Programming Interface, folders though are created in the local language. The MAPI folders are the Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items and Deleted Items.

The mailbox folders though can be pre-configured through the creation of a new registry setting – HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesMSExchangeWebParameters

The created new value is named – DefaultLCIDForCDO1, type: REG_DWORD

The value is actually the Local ID that the folders should be in, for example the value should be 0x080A for Mexican Spanish. The values for other languages are listed below and need to be entered in Hex notation.

This can be entered on the machine with OWA on it. The Microsoft Internet Information Server should be stopped, and then the Cdo.dll should be replaced under WinrootSystem32. The quoted registry key and value should then be added, before the Microsoft Internet Information Server is restarted.

This process will ensure that any new client logons will see folders named in the same language as established through the registry key.
