There is a simple command available for Linux Ubuntu that is perfect for those times when you need to restart the computer, but don’t have time to wait for the possibility of it being time for a disk scan/check. Ordinarily, after a set number of boots, the dis check will run automatically, but there are many situations where you want o have a little more control.

To FORCE linux to RUN the disk check at boot, use this command:

shutdown -Fr now

On the other hand, if you want to boot clean and fast, and skip the disk check, for whatever reason, you can force a boot without the disk check by using the following command:

shutdown -fr now
