Changing the POP3 Banner as Displayed when Connecting to the Exchange Server
A banner similar to that listed below will normally appear when connecting to Exchange 2000 or 2003 server through the Post Office Protocol, or POP.

• Microsoft Exchange 2003 POP3 server version 6.0.4417.0 (your_server_name) ready.

More information about the functionality of Post Office Protocol can be found at mycomputeraid.com

The banner can be changed but issues may arise if the Active Directory is changed when a user is making use of ADSI Edit snap-in, LDP Utility or any other form of LDAP client. These issues may be resolved through the reinstallation of Windows servers but may not be.

The changes though can be made through the use of MetaEdit or Metabase Explorer. Through these, or other metabase editing tool the LmPOP3SVCvirtual server number file needs to be found. Then editing can proceed by clicking on New and then String Record.

Once the ID box entry is shown to be Other, 41661 can be typed into the same box. The Data box also needs to be changed to the banner that you are after. For Windows Server 2003 and later versions of MetaEdit it is necessary to double click on the new value to enter the text required.

Changes can be seen after the POP3 Virtual server has been restarted, and then through navigation to port 110, this should then show that the original banner is no longer on show.

Changing the Primary Email Address in Exchange 2007
Amending the Primary Email Address in Exchange 2007
It is necessary on occasion to make a new email address to add to an existing one for a user, and then to make it the default one so that it can be seen and replied to by mail recipients.

Exchange 2007 makes the process though more difficult that Exchange 2000 and 2003 did. In previous releases it used to be possible to make a new email address the default just by altering the “set as primary” marker. This though cannot be done in 2007 as the option of “set as reply” is not available. Therefore it is necessary to uncheck the marker that allows for “automatically update email addresses based on recipient policy.” Once this marker has been removed then the option for “set as reply” is available and can be applied to the new email address. One last step is to manually alter the primary email address within the AD.

Configure Instant Messaging SRV Records

Configuring Instant Messaging SRV Records on Exchange 2000
Having configured Instant Messaging on a Network it is then necessary to configure it for different clients and user accounts. This requires users to log on making use of their user names and also their domain names.

This means that if the user name is johns and the domain name is mycomputeraid.com, then the email address would normally be johns@mycomputeraid.com

To log into Instant Messaging though requires a different formula, and requires knowledge of the Instant Messaging server’s Fully Qualified Domain Name. For example server3.mycomputeraid.com, the IM Router, thus the logon for Instant Messaging would be johns@server3.mycomputeraid.com

This though does mean that the SRV records in the DNS will need to be configured so that all users can find their IM Routers. This though also means that DS Client Software will have to be installed for users of Win98 and NT.

Configuring the SRV Record can be done via Administration Tools and DNS MMC. The Forward Lookup Zone container then needs to be opened, and then the zone for the domain needs to be double clicked. Right click on the zone and then pick Other New Records. Within the Resource Record type choose Service Location and the click the Create Record button.

This will then open the New Resource Record window, in this type _RVP in the Service box, as well as 80 in the Port number box. The Host Offering this Service then needs to be filled with the Fully Qualified Domain Name, and then confirmed. This should mean that when you double click the _TCP sub folder in the zone folder that a new _RVP record is there.

This will then allow for the Instant Messaging logon name to be matched to the email user name – johns@mycomputeraid.com through the Instant Messaging client, then Tools and Accounts. If everything has been done correctly then you should be able to logon to Instant Messaging with the email address.
