Learning how to create logs through perfmon.exe will help you to better identify network bottlenecks in your system. And in running performance monitor tasks, your goal is to create a log which you can interpret later on. Here’s how:

Make your way through System Monitor> Performance Logs> Alerts> Counter Logs so you can create your first log.

A dialogue box will appear. Make a name for your log and place it in your desired directory (or the default perflog directory).

Next you have to add Objects or Counters. Objects are simpler so you might want to start there. Once you are more familiar with objects and counters based on what you want data on as well as how much your disk space can accommodate, you can be pickier about your settings.

Then you need to set your time-interval. Make sure you set this in relation to your available disk space. For first timers you can choose the 15 seconds default.

Click Add and your selections will be all set for your performance monitoring.

Right click on the green button to make the performance monitoring begin or end.

Once you are more familiar with the nitty-gritty of logging you will be able to manipulate how perfmon works for you.
