Windows XP and VISTA: How To Backup Your Registry

It’s a good idea to know how to back up your system Registry.  Even if System Restore Points are already activated, there may come a time when you want to force a new Restore Point to be created.  Here is how it is accomplished, first in Windows Vista, and followed by the proper steps to do the same thing in Windows XP.

Windows Vista
1. Click START.
2. Type systempropertiesprotection, and press ENTER.
    If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
3. Click the System Protection tab, then click Create.
4. Type a name for the restore point.
5. Click Create.
6. Click OK
7. Click OK (yes, it must be done twice).
5. If System Restore is OFF, do this:
    A. Click the local drive on which to create the Restore Point.
    B. Click Apply.
    C. Click Create.

 
Windows XP
1. Click Start.
2. Click Run.
3. Type %SystemRoot%system32restorerstrui.exe.
4. Click OK.
5. Click “Create a restore point”.
6. Click Next .
7. Type a name for the restore point.
8. Click Create.
9. When the restore point has been created, click Close.

Note If System Restore is OFF, you will see a message asking whether you want to turn on System Restore now.     A. Click Yes.
    B. Uncheck “Turn off System Restore” in the System Properties dialog box
    C. Click OK.
    D. Repeat this step.
