VISTA: How do I change my IP address?

Your IP address is how you are identified to networks, whether they are in-house networks, or global communities such as the Internet.  IP stands for “Internet Protocol”, and your IP address will either be assigned by the system administrator of the network, or your Internet Service Provider.  For home internet users, their IP address is dynamic, which means that it changes each time they connect to the network.  For network users, the IP address is usually static, which means it doesn’t change from login to login.

If you should need to change the IP address on Windows Vista, follow these steps:

1) Go to the Control Panel from the Start menu.
2) Click “Network and Internet” and then “Network and Sharing Center.”
3) Click “Manage network connections.”
4) Choose which Internet connection you want to change. Right click on it and select “Properties.”
5) Click the “Networking” tab.
6) Choose either Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) or Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6).
7) Click “Obtain an IP Address Automatically” to reset your IP address automatically, then click OK.
8) Click “Use the following IP Address” to enter your own IP settings.
9) Enter your IP address into the boxes marked “IP Address,” “Subnet Mask”, and “Default gateway.”
