Setting server mode on Windows 98
Windows 98 can be made to run much faster and crash less by makeing a few adjustments here and there. One of the adjustments that can be made is setting windows 98 to use “Network Server Mode” to do this your windows 98 must have more then 24MB of physical memory. This setting will aggressively buffer data in memory, which then reduces time-consuming disk operations and will optimize the File System. The name Network Server Mode is misleading and your desktop functions will remain unaffected.
1) Select Start > Settings > Control Panel
2) Open System, select the Performance tab, click on File System under the Advanced Settings heading
3) On the Hard Disk tab, select Network Server as the typical role of this computer
