MS OFFICE: Replace Normal.dot Repair Problems
The default template in Windows Word is a fille named normal.dot. It contains many of the customization settings used when opening a new document. Becaue this file is modified fairly often, it has numerous opportunity to become corrupted. One this happens, the easiest solution is to remove the file and create a new one. Exit MS Word before you begin!
Some of the common errors you get when needing to replace the normal.dot file:
– word encountered file corruption while opening c:program filesofficenormal.dot
– The file is in use by another application or user. (c:WindowsProfilesUsername…Normal.dot)
– Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library. Runtime Error! Program: C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice10[application].exe
1. Click START >> Search
2. Type “Normal.dot”
3. Click “More advanced options”
4. Check the labeled “Search hidden files and folders”
5. Click “Search”
6. Rename each instance of “Normal.dot” that is found. “old.normal.dot” is a safe choice.
7. Start word. MS Word, unable to find it’s template, will create a new one.
8. To replace macros and other custom settings, use Organizer.
From Organizer, select “Use Settings from another document or template”.
Follow the necessary steps.
9. Delete the “old.normal.dot” files. This optional, but recomended. Word will ignore them.
