Looking at your Performance Logs

The key to being able to make use of your Performance Monitor (perfmon.exe) is to know how interpret logs. Knowing what they mean will help you point out the bottlenecks that exist in your system.

• First you have to stop your running perfmon.exe. Right click on the green button and have it stop.
• Click on the Log Icon on the upper left area of the screen and then find your log file in the place where you set the directory and open it.
• Click on the “+” button (in the same row as the Log Icon) to select the objects and counters you want to look at. You can start with the % Processor. Click on Add and a static line will appear on your graph.
• Add more objects and counters as you wish, but keep in mind that you can only pick the ones you selected when you created the log.
• Once you’re done, all the objects and counters you’ve added will show a static line on the graph. The entire information will look like a still shot of the actual performance monitoring process.

You can also adjust the time frame by right clicking anywhere on the graph and click the Source Tab where the Time Range slide bar can be adjusted. This will help you interpret the data you have on your log.
