Best CMS content management systems
Top CMS systems
A Content Management System (CMS) is the interface a person uses to create and edit the pages on a website. While people are still able to create their own HTML pages, layout their own site design, and implement changes in their own unique way, CMS has provided an easier way to manage online information, putting site management into the hands of novice Internet users without losing the style and integration that has long been the province of professional website designers.
There are quite a few popular Open Source CMS tools. Some have been developed for specific purposes, such as blog writing, dynamic page design. Others are more generalized, and serve to act as all-purpose site design tools. In this article, we’ll look at five of the most popular CMS tools, and why they rise above the crowd.
WordPress
This is one of the most popular CMS tools available today, and is used primarily for blogs that have a limited number of users who need individual access to create and post pages at a site independent of interaction with the site owner. It is generally thought to be the easiest CMS for novice users, and its Open Source nature has allowed a plethora of modules that increase the functionality and performance of a site. It is based in the PHP programming language, and uses the popular GPL Open Source license.
Drupal
This is another easy to use CMS. In addition to the flexible nature of its original design, there is a huge amount of plug in modules available to extend its functionality. It biggest drawback is that Drupal is a very complex system to use, which results in frequent security updates being required. It doesn’t provide as many layouts (themes) as WordPress, but its Open Source nature means that more are being developed on a regularly basis. It uses the PHP programming language, and is released under the popular GPL Open Source License.
Joomla
This CMS makes its mark in the arenas of social networking and eCommerce. It is generally used in commercial applications, and is considered to be one of the most customizable and stable web design and enhancements available in the Open Source community. As with the previous entries, it uses PHP and is licensed under the GPL license agreement, allowing for an array of modules to extend its usefulness.
Media Wiki
Designed primarily for the purpose of information resource management. In addition to thousands of other wiki uses, it is the basis for Wikipedia, which is arguably one of the most popular information resources available on the Internet today. Unfortunately, Wiki Media is not as versatile as some other CMS tools, and the end results tend to be somewhat uniform in appearance. Programming platform is PHP, and it, like the previous entries, uses the GPL license agreement.
Liferay
This CMS is designed with professional designers in mind. It’s an excellent tool for creating web portals, calendars, and collaborated efforts. It is somewhat more versatile than most CMS, in that it can produce PHP, Ruby, and Java output. Likewise, it uses the MIT license agreement, which is similar but somewhat more restrictive than the GPL license.
